The following rules are set to maintain the uniform beauty and integrity of Fair Oaks Cemetery. For questions or concerns, contact the caretaker.

Cemetery Plots/Decorations

  • Plots are maintained by the cemetery caretakers including grass mowing and weed whacking. Weeding of the space used by plot owners for decorations is the responsibility of the plot owner/family.
  • Plot owners are permitted no more than 12” of space in front of their headstones for decorations or planting. Before placing anything beside the stone you must ask the caretaker for permission.  Nothing is permitted behind the stone. Absolutely no shrubs or trees are allowed.
    • Annual flowers and/or perennial flowers may be planted but they must be maintained so that they do not encroach onto the graves beside them or extend past the allotted 12″ from the base of the headstone.  (Headstones refer to the stone placed at the head of the grave. Additional flush stones are not permitted decorations due to their location)
  • Veteran flag holders and flags are the property of the Lawrence County VA office. Removal of a holder without authorization is unlawful. Flags are removed the week after Flag Day and replaced every year for Memorial Day.
  • Headstones and grave markers must be approved by the Cemetery Caretaker prior to installation. All markers must be placed on a concrete foundation and installed by a monument company. *Note: if you choose to order a stone online and have it delivered, you must contact the caretaker before you order it. The Cemetery does not have the equipment to move or place headstones. We have a contractor that you can contact for this method.
  • Seasonal decorations need to be removed at the end of the seasons. For example, Christmas decorations need removed before Saint Patrick’s Day. If the family does not remove them, Cemetery staff will dispose of them. Damaged or faded artificial flowers that are not removed by families may be removed by cemetery staff.
  • For disposal of wreaths or larger items please utilize the dumpster by the garage.
  • Shepherds’ hooks, windchimes, and balloons are not permitted. Please see the caretaker for instructions on safe placement for yard flags.

Funerals/Interments

  • All funeral flower arrangements and wreaths will be removed by cemetery caretakers once the flowers have wilted.
  • We require a Certificate from the funeral director or crematorium for all cremation interments. If you do not have this document, please reach out to your funeral director or crematorium.
  • We do not permit the spreading of human cremains on cemetery property.
  • Cemetery plots can accommodate up to two cremations each. We can inter cremated remains on top of an already interred vault.

Miscellaneous

  • The cemetery is open to the public from sun rise to sundown. No entry after sunset is permitted**.
  • The cemetery is not responsible for decorations that are blown away or damaged by natural causes. Please practice caution when choosing what to place on plots.

**Failure to abide by these rules may result in revoking entry onto cemetery property.
